Billabong Women’s designer, Breanna Lee Garcia, fills us in on her inspiration, love of all things bohemian, and how she channels her passion into Billabongs newest collections. This California girl shows her love for the ocean and beach living in each of her designs while staying true to Billabong’s free-spirited roots.
Where do you live and work?
I live in Orange County, California. Billabong is based out of Irvine.
What do you do at Billabong?
I design Billabong USA Women’s collections, which includes swimwear and clothing. I also design Billabong Girls’ swim.
What inspires you?
Traveling the world has inspired me the most in my career. You can get inspiration anywhere, from anything! Like the colours of buildings, to the sea, to how stores are decorated – seeing how different things are around the globe gives you endless ideas. For the Spring 2017 collection, I took a look at Billabong’s roots and the brand’s love for the ocean. I really wanted to stay true to this free-spirited identity. For some freshness, we introduced new textures and fabrics into this collection, which I love. A soft colour palette with pops of brighter or deeper hues balances everything out.
How do you start your day?
With a cup of coffee and a kiss from my husband!
I think living the Billabong brand lifestyle really helps me stay creative and motivated in my work. I am a true California beach girl, having grown up visiting Newport Beach all my life. I even lived there for over a decade. I love the care-free lifestyle of living by the ocean, beach culture, and overall bohemian spirit.
Favourite activities & food:
I love Soul Cycle! It is a passion of mine. Along with yoga, it keeps me balanced and centered. My favourite food is strawberries, and for a treat anything chocolate with almonds.
Favourite clothing brands:
My favourite clothing line is Billabong, of course. Two close seconds are Free People, again I love that boho look, and Zara.
Favourite travel destinations:
That would have to be a three-way tie between Byron Bay in Australia, Bali, and Sayulita, Mexico.
Favourite beach in the world:
Victoria Beach in Laguna, California. I feel most at home there, and it has breath taking views.
My muse would be Nicole Richie. I love her free-spirit, and she has an amazing eye for vintage looks. She makes looks from the 60s and 70s look so current and fashionable.
Kate Hudson would be my celeb pick.
Advice for rocking your swimwear:
I would say to wear what you feel comfortable and confident in. My favourite tip is to wear what really fits you! Many people think ‘the bigger the better’ to get the right fit and coverage, but sometimes less is more. You want to make sure a swimsuit fits like a glove.
