My mom started Swimco in 1975 as a mail-order swimwear company out of our basement, and she always taught me to treat our customers as friends. Although we’ve become Western Canada’s leading swimwear retailer, our core values remain the same. It’s still about making our customers feel confident in swimwear, so they can be free to enjoy some of the best experiences of their lives. Thank you for making us a part of your adventures.
Lori Bacon, President, Swimco
It was difficult for my mom to find the swimwear that my brothers and I needed for our swim team, so she started a mail-order business in the basement of our home.
Swimco began focusing on fashion swimwear. My brother Steve, my husband Dave, and I helped my mom open three stores in Calgary, and expanded to Vancouver.
We continued to open new locations across Alberta and British Columbia, adding Kelowna and Victoria into the mix. Our reputation for providing great service preceded us in these markets, and our customer base grew quickly.
We added more stores, including a location in Red Deer, Alberta. We had grown into a company with 14 stores and over 150 employees.
In December 2011 Swimco bought out Swimwear Etc; this move broadened our reach across two more provinces and nine more cities. The acquisition pushed the Swimco store count from 14 to 25 in one month! Operating in nine cities across BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Swimco is Western Canada’s leading swimwear provider.
Looking back, it’s hard to imagine that Swimco started with just a few customers, operating out of our basement. What I am most proud of is that we still run our company with the same family values and care for our customers that started it all over 36 years ago.
